TO HALEAKALA CRATER
Expect some pretty slow going on the way up. There are many switchbacks on the way up and it is a pretty steep hill you are climbing. Keep your eyes open for cattle on the road. You are going through an open range ranch on the way up to the crater. Also watch out for the geese in the road. These are Nene Geese, they are the Hawaii state bird and an endanger species of bird.
On the trip back down the mountain you will want to use the low gear on the car. It is a steep road and you do not want to over heat the brakes on the car resulting in brake failure.

TO HANA
This is a trip that you need plan on spending the whole day doing. Don't plan any events for the evening. You'll be bushed. On your way through either Kahului or Paia stop and get some food and drinks. It is a good idea to gas the car up because once you get out past Paia there is not much else. The road is narrow and quite windy with many bridges that can only accommodate one car at a time. There are numerous turnouts all along the way. TO MAKENA BEACH
In my opinion, this is one of the prettiest beaches in the State of Hawaii. The wave at this beach can be a bit dangerous when there is some big surf. If you are in doubt about the waves do not go out in them! Trust your instincts. Makena beach does not have lifeguards.
Just over the rise on the far right hand side of the beach is the "Little Beach". Be warned, they call it Little Beach because the people were little or nothing at all. This is Maui's "unofficial" nude beach. Not recommended for young children unless they're used to this sort of thing! You'll need to hike over the rocks at the end of Big Beach to reach it.
