Pot dealer gets six months in jail and probation
Peter J. Gilman, 24, was sentenced Friday to a six-month jail term for selling drugs at Baldwin Beach Park in Pa‘ia last year. Second Circuit Court Judge Joel August also placed Gilman on five years’ probation. Gilman will be permitted to serve the jail sentence on consecutive weekends beginning July 23 so he can continue working to support his pregnant wife. Gilman was arrested with nearly 200 grams of hashish and nearly 400 grams of marijuana in an undercover police operation. A 10-year prison term had been recommended. The prosecution agreed to a reduced charge of second-degree promotion of a harmful drug.
Thrillcraft and parasail law overturned
A federal judge invalidated a state law barring thrillcraft and parasail boats from operating off Ka‘anapali during the humpback whale season.
The ruling, issued by U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway on July 9, was based on findings that the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) pre-empts the state law. The motion to invalidate the law was filed by Ka‘anapali Tours and UFO Chuting of Hawai‘i, two parasail operations who are forced to close their businesses every winter. The state law banned the operation of commercial thrillcraft such as Jet Skis and other high-speed boating operations in waters off South Maui and West Maui from December 15 through May 15, believing that fast-moving watercraft pose a threat to humpback whales that migrate to the area every winter. Mollway’s decision raises many concerns among environmentalists and lawmakers. Although the Marine Mammal Protection Act states that no vessel can approach within 100 yards of a protected marine mammal, high-speed craft like Jet Skis are often rented to inexperienced riders who pose a potential threat if they do not understand the laws about approaching whales.

Awesome Surfing movie!
If you like surfing, or at least like watching surfing, you must go see "Riding Giants." Filmmaker Stacy Peralta covers the 1,000 year history of big-wave surfing, but concentrates more on the last half century in this adrenalized action-documentary. Peralta, director of "Dogtown and Z-Boys," focuses on '50s legend Greg Noll, aka "Da Bull," '70s phenom Jeff Clark who discovered the big waves of Mavericks in Northern California, and current icon Laird Hamilton, one of the pioneers of tow-in surfing at Maui's Jaws, who has made his own place in the mythology of the sport.
You can check out this surfing movie on Maui at the only stadium seating theatre on Maui at the Maui Mall Megaplex in Kahului.

You will witness firsthand the last seconds of a lava flow that formed this portion of Maui thousands of years ago. Your guide will explain the many lava formations along with current theories of their origins.

Maui Cave Adventures provides the gear: hardhats, flashlights, gloves and hip packs with bottles of water. Hikers must wear closed-toe shoes. Long pants and t-shirts are suggest caving attire. Two tours are offered, the scenic walking tour for hikers age 6 and up which usually departs at 11 am and the wild adventure tour for physically fit participants age 15 and older, which beings at 1 pm.
Ka'leku Caverns is located three miles before Hana. From Kahului, take Hana Highway 360 toward Hana. Past mile marker 31, turn left on Ulaino Road. Drive 0.4 miles to the Ka'eleku Caverns visitor center entrance. Maui Cave Adventures offers tours every day but Sunday. Reservations are recommmended. To reserve, go to:
