Maui's Aquarium
Maui's Aquarium, known as the "Maui Ocean Center", is a definite must-see while visiting Maui. It has been voted Maui's #1 attraction and is one of the world's top aquariums. The Maui Ocean Center's mission is to foster understanding, wonder and respect for Hawaii's marine life. You can explore Hawaii's underwater world, up close, with over 60 exhibits alive with coral, fish, turtles, sharks and sea jellies--there's something for everyone at the Maui Ocean Center. There is a snack bar as well as a nicer restaurant called the Maui Seascape, both with wonderful views of Ma'alaea Harbor. You also shouldn't miss the touch pool (where you can actually touch creatures from the ocean, such as sea cucumbers and others) and the interactive Whale Exhibit. It's a great place to visit for children and adults alike!
The Aquarium is located right off Highway 30 in Ma'alaea Harbor (about 1/2 way between the Kahului Airport and Lahaina on the main highway). The Aquarium is open 365 days per year from 9 am - 5 pm. For more information, visit their website at www.mauioceancenter.com or call 808-270-7000.
Farmer's Markets of Maui
Looking for Farmer's Markets on Maui? There are two nice ones. The first is located on the West Side of Maui in the Honokowai Market (in the Hawaiian Moons parking lot, across from Honokowai Park). This one is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 7 am - 11 am.
The other one is located on the South Side of Maui in the parking lot of the Suda's Store & Fish Market on South Kihei Road, just south of the intersection with Mokulele Highway (note that the store is now closed but the Farmer's Market lives on). This one is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 1:30 -5:30 pm.
Both may feature locally grown fruits and vegetables, fresh baked bagels, breads and muffins, fresh made juices, assorted cheeses, chips and salsa, fresh tropical flowers and ready-to-take-home pineapples, macadamia nuts, and maui onions. Stop by for fresh taste samples!

Get Lei'd on Maui
There's nothing to fill your Maui vacation with the spirit of Aloha like getting lei'd as soon as your feet hit island ground. Tell us what you think...
Okay, okay, all word play aside...
Hi there, friends and visitors! As one of the Editors of Maui Today--the most comprehensive guide to Maui on the planet-- I am constantly searching for what you, our honored guests, are looking for to help make your Maui visit memorable.
If you are planning a Maui vacation or have loved ones that are, consider being "Greeted with Aloha" upon your arrival.
As soon as you get off of the plane you can immediately be welcomed to the island by smiling, local women who will adorn you with fragrant flower leis. The flower lei has long been the timeless symbol of Aloha--unity, love, beauty and acceptance. Receiving one promises to get you in the right mindset to experience an amazing Maui vacation... and after being on an airplane breathing recycled air for hours, the sweet smell of Maui flowers is a fantastic way to lift your spirits.
The Aloha spirit doesn't stop here. (I'm not a lei 'em and leave 'em kind of gal...nudge, nudge, wink, wink) Ask your Greeter questions about the island! What's the fastest way to your hotel? Where can you find a decent meal right away? Ask, ask, ask.
I believe in providing you, our guest, with an outstanding first impression of Maui.
I'd really love to get some feedback from you guys out there on this type of service. If you have previously been to Maui and have been "greeted" let me know how you liked it. Good experience? Bad experience? Tell us about it!
If you are planning a trip to Maui and would like to book a Greeting, please send me an email and we can set something up. Gift baskets upon arrival are also available.
This ("Greeting of Aloha") is a new adventure for me so we'll see how the reader response goes. If this service is in high demand we can link it up to MauiQueen.com so it will be easy for you guys to see our packages, gift baskets etc. and of course, to schedule your very own Greeting of Aloha!
To contact me, fill out the comment card below, or call me at 808-205-0135
I'm looking forward to hearing from you all.
Remember, Life is too short...Get Lei'd on Maui!
Aloha, Starr Tendo

Maui Child Care
What to do with the kids when you need to "get away" on your Maui getaway? You asked, here's our recommendations...
One of the top questions that travelers making their way to Maui with their youngsters ask is, "What do we do with the little ones if we want to get away for a few hours?".
Some resorts have a referral list to PATCH (people attentive to children) certified individuals who will come to your hotel and watch the kids one on one. This type of service can come in handy if you're planning on a late night and want the peeps in bed before you come back, or if one of the little guys is a little under the weather.
Other resorts may have on-site daycare centers that offer fun and stimulating activities for the kids. This is an awesome solution if your resort offers this type of service. Unfortunately, many resorts are not equipped to do so...ask if the one you are planning on staying at does.
If you're staying at a condo or bed and breakfast (as a lot of families do because of the more "home-like" atmosphere that they provide--chances are that you're on your own for childcare.
What to do? What to do? Movies? Dinner? Open-bar snorkel? Watching the sunset with your partner without keeping one eye on your two-year-old-sand-monster the whole time? Never fear...there is still hope!
Check out Maui Playcare. They are located right in the heart of South Maui--near the majority of condos, resorts and grown-up hotspots. They offer tons of safe, fun entertainment for kids. Think jumping castle, climbing rock wall, arts & crafts, cartoon room and a large play area. You can be confident that your kids are having a great time with other youngsters.
For your peace of mind, the folks at Maui Playcare send you off with a beeper so that you know that in case of an emergency you will be contacted immediately.
They have fun...you have fun...everyone is happy. That's what a Maui vacation is all about.

Magic Show great for children!
Looking for a magic show that is great for children year-round? Try the Kupanaha show at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel! Kupanaha features World Renowned Illusionists Jody & Kathleen Baran. The show includes a gourmet dinner, specialty drinks, cutting-edge illusions, legends of Hawaii's extraordinary demigod's illustrated through the hula and chant of the award winning Kano'eau Dance Academy. This show is presented by the Kaanapali Beach Hotel. Call 808-667-0128 for reservations (dinner show Tuesday - Saturday).
To be honest, I believe this is a great show for children. It's more of a "Vegas-style" show than the truly wonderful Warren & Annabelle's which is more "close up magic". These two shows are entirely different and Warren & Annabelle's is most for adults. They offer "family shows" seasonally (mainly during the Christmas Holidays and during the summer) and this show shouldn't be missed for the families --when it is offered. I can't speak highly enough about Warren & Annabelle's. I thought the Kupanaha show was a GREAT show for children under the age of about 12 and it's offered year-round! Adults are just along for the ride--just one person's opinion.

1,100 evacuated after fire starts at the Four Seasons on Maui
About 1,100 guests and employees were evacuated from the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea after a fire in a basement laundry room sent smoke through the hotel's north wing Tuesday afternoon April 20th. No injuries to guests or employees were reported in the fire, which was largely contained to a duct system running through all seven floors of the tower. Losses are described as "substantial," with smoke, heat, and water damage to the roof, laundry room and fifth floor, where there was an exit for the duct. About 100 rooms were affected by the fire.
Some guests reported seeing flames as well as black smoke coming from the middle portion of the north wing. Guests and staff were allowed to return to the hotel about 2 1/2 hours later when fire officials determined it was safe. It was very fortunate that Wailea Resort now has a brand new fire station with firefighters very close by. This news was taken from the Maui News on April 21st.

Maui Diving Locations
Looking for the best snorkeling and diving sites on Maui? There are quite a few to choose from! Maui Dive Shop offers a complimentary "Maui Dive Guide" at any of their store locations and it's a great guide to the most popular snorkel and dive sites.
On the West Side of Maui, great snorkel and dive spots include Honolua Bay (6/10ths of a mile past mile marker 32 on Route 30 north of Kapalua), Kapalua Bay, Kahekili Beach Park (known locally as Airport Beach), Black Rock (located at the Sheraton Hotel) and Olowalu (mile marker 14 on Highway 30).
On the South Side of Maui, great snorkel and dive spots include Kamaole Parks I,II and III (located along South Kihei Road befoer Wailea, Ulua Beach (in the heart of Wailea), Wailea Beach (also right in the Wailea Resort), Makena Landing (on Makena Road in Makena), Ahihi Bay and La Perouse Bay (located at the end of the road). Use caution on entries and exits at La Perouse Bay due to the rugged coastline.
On the East Side of Maui, there are great beaches for watching surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing including Ho'okipa Beach Park, Baldwin Beach and Keanae, but these beaches are not recommended for diving due to the dangerous surf and strong currents. Hana Bay is a good snorkel/dive location if you are in Hana.
Two places that are not recommended for snorkeling or diving due to the large surf and strong currents are Makena Beach, also known as Big Beach, and DT Fleming Beach Park in Kapalua.
The grand daddy snorkel spot is Molokini Crater but it is only accessible by boat. The inside of the crater is the most popular snorkel spot on Maui; thus, many people agree that you see more "snorkelers" than fish but it's still pretty unique. The backside of Molokini crater is rated the #1 wall dive in the United States. This is an advanced scuba dive location.
Lastly, for serious divers, taking a scuba dive boat over to the island of Lana'i is one of the best diving options available on Maui. Boats leave from Lahaina Harbor as well as the South Kihei Boat Ramp. There are some 25 excellent dive locations on Lana'i including "Cathedrals" and "Shark Fin" so it's definitely worth taking the boat trip!
Again, we suggest picking up a Maui Dive Guide available at any of the Maui Dive Shops. This guide gives you very specific directions to each of the above mentioned snorkel/scuba dive locations as well as other good advice. There are more than 10 Maui Dive Shops on the island. Time to get wet!
Snorkeling, Diving and Surfing Tips--as a rule, snorkeling is usually better in the morning. Afternoon tradewinds often disturb the ocean in the Kihei/Wailea area. However, good snorkeling and diving can be found in the afternoon in the Lahaina/Olowalu area. Check in any snorkel/dive shop for the current conditions of your selected area. Large surf can be very dangerous. Always check water conditions before entering the ocean. Surf will often cause the water to become murky making entries difficult. Please use caution.

Feast at Lele
Tired of the "typical" luau? Do you want something a little different but still enjoy the hula dancing and like to try new food? The Feast at Lele is a little more expensive than the other luaus but it was created by the same people as the Old Lahaina Luau and it's worth it! When they moved the Old Lahaina Luau to another location to make it bigger, they created the Feast at Lele in it's place. The Feast is smaller, more intimate luau (only 150 people max instead of 300-500) and it has the fire knife dancing which the Old Lahaina Luau does not. The Feast is a little different than all of the other luaus. The Feast is a 5 course, fine dining experience (vs a buffet). The have courses from Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji and Samoa and then dessert. They have a more extensive cocktail bar. The one point I like for people to know about the Feast is you should like to try new foods when picking the Feast. They have the traditional Hawaiian food during the Hawaiian course (Kalua pork, poi, etc.) but they do have regional food for each of the other islands.
Usually when folks ask me which luau to go to when they are tired of the same-old luau, then I tell them they owe it to themselves to check out the Feast at Lele! You can find out more information on the Feast at:

It truly is a delightful, intimate setting right on the beach located at 505 Front Street in Lahaina!

Swimming with Dolphins on Maui
Many many visitiors ask me where they can swim with the dolphins on Maui.Swimming with dolphins is a once in a lifetime pleasure! Fortunately for the dolphins but unfortunately for us, we do not have captive dolphins on Maui to sign up to swim with like they do on the Big Island and on Oahu. Our dolphins are all wild and free! We do have lots of dolphins in the ocean around Maui! You do have a good chance of seeing dolphins on many snorkel trips and whale watches (during whale season), especially the Lanai snorkel trips. However, if you are on a boat, by the time you jump in the water, the dolphins are way in front of you! So most people enjoy them from the boat. Occasionally, there will be a pod of Hawaiian spinner dolphins in the bays where the snorkel boats stop to snorkel and then those lucky folks may get the chance to snorkel with them if the dolphins stay in the bay for a little while. Check out the Gemini West Maui Snorkel trips that usually go up to Honolua Bay in the summer and also check out the Ultimate Rafting snorkel excursions that usually will go to Lanai all year round. Any Lanai snorkel trip is a good bet to maybe see dolphins, but you never know where the dolphins are going to be so you could see them at any time right in front of your hotel! Another good trip is any of the Pacific Whale Foundation trips and they have several Lanai snorkel trips to choose from. Dolphins love to ride at the front of any boats when you encounter (it's almost like they are trained even though they are wild and free!). Everyone should try for a wild dolphin encounter. It's so much more exciting to see them in their natural environment!
