Jury selection is postponed due to a death in the family.
The second week of Michael Jackson's child molestation trial is already over. After nearly one hour in the courtroom, jury selection was delayed until February 14th due to a death in the family of Jackson's attorney, Thomas Meserau.
The pool of more than 250 potential jurors was told not to discuss the case nor follow it in the media. When jury selection resumes next week, lawyers from both sides will question each person individually and determine who will serve as the 12 jurors and eight alternates.
Also in today's hearing, Judge Rodney Melville agreed to release parts of prospective jurors answers to the seven-paged questionnaire filled out last week. They were asked about their history with cancer, if they had ever been accused of inappropriate behavior, and about their views on religion and race. Melville says he will remove sensitive information at the request of the jurors.
Jackson himself did not attend today's proceedings. He is charged with 10 counts of child molestation, including kidnapping and giving alcohol to a minor. If he is found guilty, Jackson could spend up to 20 years behind bars.
